Vietnamese woman arrested for ‘stealing Chinese tourist’s luxury suitcase’ at airport in Thailand
A Vietnamese woman was arrested for allegedly stealing a Chinese tourist's luxury suitcase at an airport in Thailand.
Ong My An, 27, allegedly took the pink Rimowa suitcase from the baggage belt at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport near Bangkok.
She arrived from Ho Chi Minh City on September 7, and reportedly left the airport with the suitcase.
The Chinese owner, Qin Yusong, reported the suitcase missing after arriving on Guangxi Beibu Gulf Airlines flight GX 8907 from Nanning, China at around 8 pm local time.
He had cleared immigration and headed to carousel 15 to collect his luggage when he realised the suitcase was gone. It reportedly contained cash, personal belongings and a watch worth around 200,000 yuan.
Tourist Police and airport officials launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from several locations, eventually identifying the suspected thief as Ong.
They traced her movements as she checked into a condominium in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district, where she stayed until September 9.
She reportedly went to a housing estate in Bo Win, Chonburi, before returning to Bangkok on September 15.
The suspect was arrested as she was heading to the condominium on Sukhumvit Soi 6. She was detained on suspicion of 'nighttime theft at an airport'.
Officers escorted her to the property, where the stolen Rimowa suitcase was recovered.
The Vietnamese passenger was then taken to Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station and handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings.
Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phueak-um, commissioner of the Tourist Police, said police were committed to ensuring the safety of both Thai and foreign visitors, in line with Royal Thai Police policy.
He said: 'We want every tourist to feel reassured that wherever they travel in Thailand, the Tourist Police will be there to stand by them and help ensure their safety throughout their stay.'
