Police probe death of Swedish tourist, 63, found in hotel room covered in bruises

Police are probing the death of a Swedish tourist found covered in bruises in his hotel room in southern Thailand.

Stefan Haglund, 63, was staying at the Arinara Beach Resort Phuket hotel when a housekeeper found him convulsing on the floor, on September 18.

The maid reportedly discovered the half-naked Swede lying face-down with his torso and legs covered in dark splotches before calling emergency responders at around 10 am local time.

Stefan was still alive and was reportedly suffering seizures when he was rushed to Thalang Hospital.

But his condition rapidly deteriorated and he was declared dead at 9:44 pm that evening.

Police said there were no indications of violence or theft in his room, where liquor bottles, heart medication, and a blood pressure monitor were found.

Police Colonel Ekkarat Plaiduang, superintendent of Choeng Thale district station, said investigators were reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing hotel staff and other witnesses.

He said: 'After receiving a radio report, we deployed investigators to the hotel to check CCTV footage and question hotel staff.

‘We found that the victim slipped and fell in front of the hotel restaurant on September 6.

‘After that, on September 14, he went out to purchase wound-dressing supplies to treat his injuries himself.

‘On September 17, hotel housekeeping staff found him lying on the floor, but he refused medical treatment.

‘On September 18 at around 10 to 10:30 am, the victim suffered a seizure before the rescue team was contacted to take him to hospital, where he passed away at around 10pm.

‘Currently, there are no reports of foul play. We must wait for the autopsy results from a forensic doctor at Vachira Hospital, which will be examined this Monday (September 21).'

Police said Stefan had travelled to Phuket alone and had been staying at the hotel for around four to five days.

Medication for high blood pressure and a blood pressure monitor were found in his room. Police were also told he frequently went to bars despite having hypertension and heart disease.

Three bottles of liquor were also discovered, while his personal belongings remained intact.

Authorities said they were continuing to investigate Stefan's death while coordinating with the Swedish Embassy and Immigration Bureau to inform his family.
