Canadian paedophile, 72, 'caught with young boys in hotel room' in the Philippines
A Canadian paedophile was allegedly caught with three young boys in his hotel room in the Philippines.
Orville Frank Mader, 72, from British Columbia, was allegedly lying in bed with a male minor when cops stormed his room in Laguna province, on June 30.
The bespectacled Canadian - who had previously been convicted in Thailand and Cambodia for sexual abuse of children as young as eight - was shocked as officers surrounded him and presented an arrest warrant.
Two other boys were found playing computer games in the adjoining room.
Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents detained the suspect, while all three children were rescued and placed under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Rendel Sy, BI Fugitive Search Unit chief, said authorities have been tracking the suspect for an extended period because he frequently moved between locations - often impoverished communities.
He said: 'We noticed that he often lives in underdeveloped areas where he is said to be more likely to entice young people. When we entered the house, we found minors — one of whom was lying on the bed next to him.
'He was convicted in Cambodia, and he also has cases in Thailand. That is why we consider him a threat to public safety, especially to children. He also has pending investigations here in the Philippines related to possible abuse of minors.'
Police said the suspect used his home as a hangout for local children, reportedly enticing them with computer games.
The BI said it was alerted to Orville's presence in the country after Canadian authorities cancelled his passport.
The agency added: 'While he is not currently facing a criminal prosecution in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canada Border Services Agency advised Philippine authorities that he has a documented criminal history involving sexual offences against children and may pose a potential risk to minors.
'Records shared with the BI showed that Mader had been apprehended on two separate occasions for alleged sexual offences against children, in 2016 and again in 2022.
'Canadian authorities also reported a long-documented pattern of similar offences in Thailand and Cambodia dating back to the early 2000s.'
Immigration records reportedly showed that Mader entered the Philippines as a temporary visitor on September 29, 2015, but he never renewed his visa, making him an 'undocumented overstayer' for nearly 11 years.
The BI said Orville had previously been investigated by the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police, although earlier complaints allegedly did not proceed.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said his arrest was part of the government's crackdown on child sex predators in the Philippines.
He said in a statement: 'The BI will never allow foreign predators to stay in our country.
'Protecting Filipino families is among our highest priorities. Through our #ShieldKids campaign, we are intensifying operations against foreign sexual predators and working closely with our local and international partners to ensure they are located, arrested, and removed from our communities.'
Orville was taken into custody pending deportation over immigration violations.
He was convicted in absentia in Thailand in 2007, where he allegedly paid 500 baht to have sex with an eight-year-old boy in Pattaya.
He was also jailed in Cambodia over allegations of sexually assaulting boys aged 11 and 14, but the charges were allegedly dropped. He returned to Canada as Thailand's extradition bid failed in 2010.
Orville's passport was returned, and he reportedly flew abroad to teach at child sex tourism hotspots in Southeast Asia.
